I think there are going to be a lot of _ Survivors games (I'm working on one myself). Occasional boss enemies are cool, and I understand that objectives don't seem to work in this casual fun game, but it really needs to change the level design to allow more creativity (rather than spamming the same 3 items) and use level design to influence UX more (right now most levels are more or less pseudo empty rooms). Holocure, the Vtubers version of vampire survivor with Hololive characters, is definitely taking great steps in changing combat mechanics and messing with rougelike conditions.īut we need to see some level design changes more, as most if not all these games have pretty bad levels, just escalating type of enemy with sometimes a stronger one. However (again), we need to see innovations. Though vampire survivor is already pretty much a rougelike, it can set out to establish a subgenre, maybe called "casual survivor". After all, same thing happened to games like Metroid, Deus Ex, and Doom at the beginning, and those later started genres of games. However, that doesn't necessarily mean it is bad. The current problem is that many of these survivor games are "stuck" copying from vampire survivor since streamers love that game (I could be wrong, but I think that's the case since the game is usually not too stressful, which allows for chatting during gameplay but with some intense moments as well). However, the best titles, like Celeste, did major tunings to the system to make the game more fluid, and it shows clearly why Celeste is better. But same thing applies, it is an easy to do concept but ultimately really saturated on its most basic system. You need a character that can move and jump, and you got yourself a platformer, maybe add a dash or smth while you're at it. On the same vein, making a platformer isn't hard. It's easy to think of the same concept and code them in, but there's a lot of things to consider in terms of synergies, achieving the sweet middle ground of difficult content but not stressful, planning out different weapons, etc. I wouldn't day making this game will be easy.
